Introduction

The Great Bear Forest Carbon Projects encompass three distinct initiatives across coastal British Columbia: Haida Gwaii, North and Central-Mid Coast (NCC), and South Central Coast (SCC), each owned by individual First Nations and collectives whose Traditional Territories span this iconic region. Developed under the BC Forest Carbon Offset Protocol (FCOP) v1.0, these are among the longest-running Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects in North America.

By reducing commercial harvesting and integrating ecosystem-based management across vast stretches of coastal rainforest, the projects deliver measurable, verified carbon reductions while honoring Indigenous stewardship of the land. Together, they represent what high-integrity, partnership-driven carbon development can look like at scale.

Our Role

Ostrom Climate has served as project manager for the Great Bear Forest Carbon Projects since 2009, working alongside the Great Bear Carbon Credit Limited Partnership, the Nanwakolas Offset Limited Partnership, the Council of the Haida Nation, and the Government of British Columbia. Our ongoing responsibilities include managing annual third-party verifications and facilitating the sale of offset units into both voluntary and compliance carbon markets. Ostrom Climate also acts as marketing and sales agent, connecting this world-class carbon project with buyers who value long-term, high-quality offset units.
