Introduction

sakâhk papakîtitâmôwin, meaning "Forest Breathes," is an Indigenous-owned forest carbon project that creates net climate benefits through Improved Forest Management (IFM) of lands located in northeastern Saskatchewan. Developed under Verra's VM0034 methodology, the project is structured as a grouped initiative, with individual project instances brought forward by communities of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN), whose Traditional Territories encompass the project area. The collection of PBCN project instances will make up the grouped project as a whole.

More than a carbon project, sakâhk papakîtitâmôwin will support and strengthen traditional, cultural, and heritage values for PBCN members within and external to the project area. The project ensures that future generations will thrive thanks to the sustainable practices, and that Indigenous ways of knowing are being understood and valued.

Our Role

Ostrom Climate serves as the project developer for sakâhk papakîtitâmôwin and is responsible for the creation of all project documentation. We have designed and facilitated a comprehensive stakeholder engagement process with project owner communities to meet the requirements of the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta), a process that reflects the depth of community involvement central to this project's purpose. Our role is to ensure that the technical rigour of carbon project development aligns with and supports the Nation's vision for the land.
